Meet the Committee – Belinda Lycett

What are you?

Belinda Lycett – Applied and Environmental Science Lecturer at Central Regional TAFE.

What’s your most memorable science experience?

In previous employment, I had to replicate a mistake made at a worksite in the laboratory, and come up with a solution to fix the problem… (Someone had accidentally mixed two incompatible chemicals together and I had to work out how to neutralise it to minimise the risk to the environment and the workers; a very dangerous situation until resolved).

Who is your favourite scientist and why?

Marie Curie – Because she didn’t let her husband outshine her. She was the first female to win a nobel prize, only female to win two nobel prizes and the only person to ever win the nobel prize for two different science disciplines. She put her love for science above everything, and made some amazing discoveries, but literally paid with her life.

What first got you interested in science?

Oh wow that is a tough question. I have been interested in science, and exploring how things work, for as long as I can remember.

Why did you join Scinapse?

To help bring science to the Mid-West community.
